As reported in the Red & Black, University of Georgia students in the dual-degree Double Dawgs program have been able to graduate with a masters degree within five years. Currently this program has grown and expanded across 14 schools with more than 100 degree programs. "The Double Dawgs program was created to give our ambitious students a competitive advantage after graduation while helping lower the overall cost of obtaining a graduate degree," said UGA President Jere W. Morehead in a UGA press release. "It also helps to meet the demand across the state-and beyond-for highly qualified workers with advanced, specialized knowledge." The program was formed to meet the growing need for graduate degrees in an ever-changing job market. In the recent press release, UGA Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Pamela Whitten said the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates 18 percent growth in positions that require a graduate degree, as opposed to just 12 percent growth expected in positions requiring only a bachelor’s degree. More dual degree programs are projected to be added to the Double Dawgs program as it continues to grow. "Our faculty are enthusiastic about this opportunity for students, evidenced by the more than 100 programs that have been approved so far," said UGA Vice President for Instruction Rahu Shrivastav in the press release. "We have incredibly talented undergraduate students, and our faculty are looking forward to having them as graduate students in programs that will further advance their opportunities after graduation,” he said.
